After a first golden era - in the 60s Cairo was comparable to Paris for financial investments, atmosphere of the place, and sophisticated taste, the Egyptian fashion industry had a significant downturn because of the following political turbulence. As much as it disappeared almost completely.
Moreover, in a country where 40% of the population lives below the poverty line, the range of people that fit the fashion market is very small.
On the one hand, thanks to the Cairo Fashion Festival, an initiative held at the end of April, two young entrepreneurs aimed to relaunch the fashion market by showcasing the works of 20 Egyptian fashion designers. On the other hand, fashion shows are organized as charity venues for the high class people.
